A little of this & a little of that

I am one step closer to being a Registered Dietitian! Done with my clinical rotations which I’ve been doing since November!

TPN, TF, CVD, MAP, HR, HTN, ESRD, HD, GSW, MVA, COPD, DM, SROM, PNA, CVA, GI, PO, NPO, OBX, CKD, PICC, SLP, TBI, MI, q, BID, TID, CA, AKI, ARF, ETOH, S/P…

Those are just a sampling of some medical abbreviations I have seen every day for the past 4+ months. I saw a lot of MVA & GSW...like A LOT. (Motor vehicle accident & gun shot wounds). Yep, it was quite the exciting clinical rotation!

Number #1 thing I learned:

The human body is absolutely ridiculous. Don’t take yours for granted. It is extremely resilient & fragile all at the same time. Take care of it.

Maybe you’ll look like this when you are pushing 90 years old:

My stylish & beautiful (& extremely smart) Grammy- who sometimes leaves comments on the blog. How cool is that?? She was ahead of the game with nutrition and eating right and obviously it shows.

Everyone in the nutrition department was so sweet and got this cake which was for a dual occasion. One of the managers birthday is today!

There was edible glitter on the strawberries, can you see it? I had a hefty serving of this cake…

The RD team! Minus 1 who was missing.

They got me this adorable bag as a gift! No more lab coats :)

After I said good-bye to everyone it was time for spin class.

I was pumped to use the new mash-ups I found.

Pre work-out fuel: Mini sandwich: Rosemary & Herb Flatbread + Turkey + a few Chipotle Cheddar Pretzel Thins

I always put a couple of chips/pretzels on my sandwiches for some crunch :)

I like shirts with a message.

I decided to wear my heart rate monitor! If you like numbers, you should invest in one. I’ve had this Suunto watch for 6 years now and it’s awesome. I like Suunto because they are obviously durable and I think they are really nice looking and simple to use.

45 minute spin class:

  • 4 minute warm-up
  • 4-5 minute cool-down
  • 35-40 minutes of work

You have to put a drop of water on the monitor band before you put it on or it won’t pick up your heart rate.

Ladies & gentleman this is why you should all be doing spin:

10 minutes & 19 seconds and I’ve burned 111 calories.

At the end of class:

42 minutes 56 seconds and I burned 503 calories

So 43 minutes of my day for a 503 calorie return. Pretty good bang for your buck. Especially considering I really only worked for ~38 minutes since a few minutes were cooling down & warming up & I forgot to hit the start button.

I’m going to wear my heart rate monitor for BodyPump tonight and see what an hour of endurance strength training has me at. My guess is 400 for the hour.

I got home & had a special delivery waiting for me :)

Nutty Butter! OMG you must buy some. Sarah makes 2 new flavors every month! Order them and she will ship them to your house.

For obvious reasons, I wanted to try Birthday Cake first (I’ll try the other flavor tomorrow). Who knows, maybe it would taste exactly like ColdStone Birthday Cake Remix..

Yumm.

Dinner. I have ZERO food in my place and I wasn’t that hungry.

Now that I’m not in the hospital anymore that means I’m on my own for all my meals. No more free food :(

I am excited to prepare more of my food though, even if my cooking ability is limited right now. I bet I can come up with some healthy, tasty meals.
